Zojo-ji Temple: Setsubun Tsuina Ceremony
Feb 03, 2026 at 11:00am ~ Feb 03, 2026 at 12:00pm
The Setsubun Tsuina Ceremony is a lively annual tradition, drawing large crowds to celebrate the turning of the seasons and pray for protection from misfortune. Featured is a ceremonial procession through the temple grounds led by men and women in traditional attire, accompanied by children in colorful handmade costumes that add to the festive mood. In front of the iconic Sangedatsumon Gate, visitors can enjoy mochi-pounding, playful oni (demon) dialogues and other performances rooted in Japanese folklore on stage.
Watch participants—including designated year men and women, invited members of the public and well-known figures from sports and entertainment—throw lucky beans in the mamemaki (bean-throwing) to drive away evil and invite good fortune. Take part at home by offering lucky bean sets and masu boxes, allowing people to continue the tradition beyond the temple grounds and share in the spirit of good luck and renewal.
Zojo-ji offers fuku-masu (lucky masu boxes) and fuku-mame (lucky beans) for purchase so you can enjoy bean-throwing at home.
Fuku-masu: ¥2,000 — includes beans, amulet, lucky coins and cookies
Fuku-mame: ¥1,000 — includes beans, amulet and flower petals
These are available from January 23 and can be reserved or ordered via the temple’s online store.
