Tokyo Jazz, meet Jazz Week Tokyo, your newly anointed crosstown rival in the jazz-festival heavyweight ranks. Slated for the stunning Orb theater in Shibuya’s glitzy new Hikarie complex, Jazz Week Tokyo is a five-day affair whose lineup is every bit as full-on as that of long-running Tokyo Jazz. American lounge orchestra extraordinaire Pink Martini (pictured) will reprise its meeting with veteran Japanese chanteuse Saori Yuki. Their collaboration on 2011’s 1969 was a surprise hit, putting Yuki on the charts overseas for the first time ever. Also in the lineup alongside Japanese stalwarts like Soil & Pimp Sessions is modern jazz master, saxophonist Wayne Shorter.
