Meguro is all about its residents’ health. So much so, in fact, that its Ward office recently published a guidebook to the area’s many hilly streets. Sakamichi Walking no Susume offers recommendations for seven themed walking courses, ranging from “Historical Water and Greenery” to “Investigating the History of Hills.” All routes are 3-6 kilometers in length, and there’s even a nighttime course. Detailed maps, photos and information about the landmarks you’ll be passing mean even the most directionless person won’t get lost. There’s also handy information about warm-up stretches and the proper techniques for incline walking—e.g., take smaller steps when going up and down hills. The book is available for ¥200 at the Meguro Ward office and area bookstores (see site for list). In Japanese.
