Tokyo indie hepcats drop their new Takarajima

Tokyo quartet the Siamese Cats seem to draw their main inspiration from the loose, rangy approach of 90s US indies titans like Pavement or Dinosaur Jr.—frontman Tomoyuki Natsume’s sweet but deliberately tuneless singing, the squalls of guitar feedback, it’s all there. Yet the group’s new Takarajima (“Treasure Island”) offers something for just about every kind of rock fan. A dab of Beatlesesque retro piano rock (“Honto no Hito”), a nugget of country rock (“Tegami no Tsuzuki”), even a soaring slab of J-rock (“Nagisa”). All of which means their release party at WWW should be a rollicking good time. And if you can’t catch it they also appear regularly at the long-running Club Snoozer events.
