Imagine if ’60s girl group The Ronettes had been born in Tokyo, and if instead of Phil Spector producing them, Joey Ramone was behind the mixing board. On their new, lovingly packaged album COBB (Color Of Back Beat), miniskirted trio Six take the sound and look of the early ’60s and give it a 21st century Tokyo makeover. Singer Chelio’s voice crackles with emotion on garage rockers like “Cherokee & Mr. Lee” while “His Rumor” has a crazed, pedal-to-the-medal rockabilly feel topped up with hints of Showa era pop. It all sounds, as the Thai like to say, “same same… but different.” COBB may also be the world’s first color-coded rock ‘n’ roll album. Chelio explains that the name of the record comes from the fact that each song has a different color associated with it.
