Blow your morning after out the water with a bacon-cheese-mushroom omelette—in a bowl of ramen (¥1,100). Turns out teams of medical scientists came up with this cure after decades of research, but have been soft-launching it via an obscure ramen place in the suburban streets of Koenji-minami.
While a fried breakfast in a bowl of pork broth in the UK might only be found in the vilest of sinkholes, by some weird twist of logic in Japan it’s to be found in Tabi no Tochu, an arty, upmarket noodle joint, where they have wabi-sabi bowls with wooden spoons, a Bob Dylan poster on the wall, a decent library of manga and a collection of Bob Dylan CDs. What’s the relationship between Bob Dylan and impending coronary thrombosis?
Actually if we are frank, it didn’t taste that good, despite the attention lavished on it by the nipper in the kitchen (the way he sprinkled the diced olives on showed an ignorance of this recipe’s implications). But it torpedoed any trace of the previous night’s margarita nomihodai, leaving only a few faint bubbles on the surface of the water.
Definitely a place to return to—though we will be trying what else they have up their sleeve.
