Traveling became a popular pastime in Edo era Japan, captured in works like Utagawa Hiroshige’s iconic Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road. How did Japanese artists depict travel when railroads, ships and airplanes brought them for the first time to foreign lands? Timed for the summer vacation, Traveling at the Museum! presents works on the theme of journeys from Edo ukiyo-e to more recent depictions of overseas forays by leading 20th century Japanese painters including Taikan Yokoyama and Ikuo Hirayama.
