Created as a dance-school project for at-risk youths in the South African township of Soweto, Umoja has become one of the world’s favorite touring shows. The musical celebrates the history of South Africa, from early ritual dances to latter-day club culture, highlighting the country’s contemporary verve as well as the pain of the apartheid era. “Enough energy to light up London,” declared The Daily Telegraph when the show played in the West End. “I defy anyone to leave this hit musical feeling anything less than elated.”
