Who do trendy Daikanyama cafés turn to for their hip lighting and furniture? In large part, it seems, to the creations of 20th century designer Verner Panton. Currently the subject of a retrospective at Tokyo Opera City, the Danish furniture and interior designer was responsible for many of the mod creations that are currently so fashionable—in fact, many of his 50-year-old designs, including the single-form, injection-molded plastic S chair, are still in production. The highlight of the sprawling exhibition is a full-scale recreation of Panton’s psychedelic “Phantasy Landscape” chillout room. Shagadelic, baby.
