apéro.’s story starts in 2014, when Guillaume and Chloé Dupérier opened their French wine bar and restaurant in Tokyo. Named Apero Wine Bar Aoyama, it was the initial springboard for the couple to share their new approach towards French gastronomy and natural wines with Tokyoites. Their goal? To bust the idea that understanding French wine was something to feel intimidated by. For the Dupériers, it’s instead about simply finding what you enjoy.
In 2021, the couple opened their wine boutique in Kyojima, Sumida-ku when they renovated a charming nagaya building. The boutique soon built a reputation as another hotspot for international wines, but apéro. didn’t stop there. Now, in October of the same year, apéro. is proud to announce its latest and largest expansion: the launch of its online shop.
Offering more than 200 different wines from 70 wineries in France, Spain, Italy, Australia and more, the online shop distinguishes itself by selling international natural wines that have never been seen before in Japan. The French couple curates every wine that makes it into apéro.’s selection, forming a close relationship with the owners of each winery they work with, supporting a growing community of customers, winemakers and farmers who all share the same desire: to foster more environmentally and economically sustainable business practices to contribute towards a greener future.
The Dupériers strive to showcase rare gems as well as excellent-quality, affordable bottles for more casual occasions. As such, many of the online store’s wines range from just ¥3,000. Still, over 200 wines can be a lot to choose from, and so the store has announced its ¥9,900 subscription box. Delivered monthly to your door, the box includes two bottles that have been handpicked according to your taste preferences, along with technical sheets to summarize each bottle’s characteristics and origins, as well as a surprise gift.
