First achieving renown in the ’70s for a series of portraits that were framed to exclude his subjects’ heads, Bishin Jumonji has finally, in his 60s, turned his attention to faces. A disciple of influential postwar photographer Kishin Shinoyama, Jumonji says his interest with “Faces” was not attempting to capture dramatic expressions, but to create photographs whose results could not be predicted until they were actually taken.
