Gender identity and sexual taboos are only a few of the controversial themes questioned in Black Stripe Theater’s next presentation. Set in colonial Africa and present-day London, Caryl Churchill’s Cloud 9 follows one family for whom only 25 years have passed while in the rest of the world 150 have gone by. The 1979 play made Churchill one of the most respected contemporary playwrights. Directed by Andrew Robinson, it follows a series of hard-hitting stagings by Black Stripe, which became the second expat theater group in the Kanto region, alongside Tokyo International Players, when it formed in 2007.
