The Japanese postwar avant-garde dance form butoh took its name from founder Tatsumi Hijikata’s formulation ankoku butoh, or “dance of darkness.” With Hijikata follower Tenmetsu’s longtime company Sekishoku Suiseikan, that formulation became ankoku yugi (roughly, “dark play”), hinting at the macabre yet mischievous bent of their approach. In the wake of the company’s dissolution, Tenmetsu (“blink on and off”), who has appeared in music videos for Hikaru Utada, performs solo in a new piece, Yoru Odoru, or Dances at Night.
