While Kashima Antlers’ hopes of winning the J. League Championship four years in a row are over, Gamba Osaka are still in the hunt for a third straight Emperor’s Cup title. They shouldn’t have any problem overcoming the stuttering Urawa Reds at home in the quarterfinals on December 25, after which they will face Shimizu S-Pulse or Montedio Yamagata at Ecopa Stadium in Shizuoka Prefecture. New J. League champions Nagoya Grampus are in the other half of the draw and are away to Kashima in the quarterfinals, the winners of which will meet Avispa Fukuoka or FC Tokyo. The semifinals are on December 29 and the final, as usual, will be at Tokyo’s National Stadium on New Year’s Day.
