ESOW Solo Exhibition: “Shopping Street Cruise”
Feb 17, 2024 at 1:00pm ~ Mar 10, 2024 at 7:00pm
Asakusa, Tokyo-based artist ESOW’s pieces have been presented not only in Japan, but also in the United States, Europe, and Asia. ESOW’s next solo show titled Shopping Street Cruise is inspired by experiences of wandering the many shopping streets in Asakusa that are teeming with locals. Pedaling your bicycle slowly, wandering and wondering: “Let’s go to that store again today for a cup of coffee, shall we?”
ESOW was born in Tokyo in 1972, started riding a skateboard at the age of 13, and went to the United States at the age of 17. There he discovered graffiti and created his own artistic style influenced by the Japanese aesthetic concept of iki that originated during Tokyo’s Edo Period. His medium used for expression ranges broadly with a flexible approach, including but not limited to paper, walls, wood, and three-dimensional forms. ESOW is also a founding member of T19, a pioneering group in Japanese skate culture, and a member of the Big Picture Experiment, which has carved its mark in the history of Japanese graffiti.
