Exhibition: Exploring with Hokusai! The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Ukiyo-e Prints
Dec 11, 2025 at 9:30am ~ Feb 23, 2026 at 5:30pm
The Sumida Hokusai Museum in Tokyo presents “Exploring with Hokusai! The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Ukiyo-e Prints,” an exhibition that takes you inside the world of ukiyo-e.
Every brush-drawn painting is a unique work. In contrast, ukiyo-e prints were mass produced and sold commercially. Since people visiting Edo would purchase prints to take home as souvenirs, they circulated widely. Today, ukiyo-e prints, including, of course, Hokusai’s Under the Wave off Kanagawa, are known throughout the world. These prints also acted like a form of media, capturing everyday life and trends of the time.
In this exhibition, you’ll discover how ukiyo-e prints evolved from simple black-and-white designs to vibrant multicolor works, learn about the smart printing techniques Edo artisans invented, and see how painters, carvers, and printers worked together to bring each piece to life. Through lively scenes of actors, famous spots, fans, and even old advertisements, you’ll get a fun, vivid look at the culture and spirit of Edo.
Please enjoy the wide-ranging appeal of ukiyo-e prints.
