DWAC: Gender Dynamics: Breaking Binarisms through Clothing

Dec 03, 2021 at 12:00am ~ Dec 05, 2021 at 11:59pm

On December 3, 2021, two TCK (third-culture kids) designers will be coming together to showcase their collections in their upcoming exhibition, Ameena Imran’s collection Female Masculinity and Nobue Chen’s collection Seifuku Gaze. The exhibition will be held from December 3 – December 5.

Ameena Imran, from Pakistan, is exhibiting her fashion collection that focuses on Female Masculinity and Punjabi Theatre (Pakistani theatre), which she will be analyzing through the mahi munda (tomboy) aesthetic. Nobue Chen, from Taiwan, designed her collection based on the gaze bestowed on and radiating from the school uniforms in Japan, the Seifuku. “While we both have different concepts, they have come together in a space to create awareness about their women-centric issues through their collections,” said Nobue Chen.

The exhibition will be a culmination of interactive elements as well as exhibiting the designers’ fashion collections. For the opening night, speakers have been invited from different organizations, both in-person and online to talk about issues faced by women in different areas and walks of life. “People in Pakistan have not focused enough on archetypes such as the tomboy aesthetic that are tools to break gender dynamics internally,” said Ameena Imran. Therefore, the guest speakers will be discussing topics that resonate with the designers’ objectives and focus on the clothed body to highlight the gender dynamics.

Guest speakers: Athena.Japan and two other international influentials.
