Sensōji’s origins trace back to 628, when two fishermen discovered a Buddhist statue in the Sumida River. Recognized as Kannon, the Bodhisattva of compassion, the figure was enshrined by the local village chief, marking the temple’s founding. According to tradition, Kannon appeared as a golden dragon when descending from heaven, a legend still reflected in the temple’s imagery today.
