Kurayami Matsuri in Tokyo

Kurayami Matsuri (Darkness Festival)

Apr 30, 2026 at 12:00am ~ May 06, 2026 at 11:30pm

Kurayami Matsuri is one of Tokyo’s most distinctive traditional festivals, held at Okunitama Shrine in Fuchu. The festival dates back more than 1,000 years and is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. It is known as the “Darkness Festival.” The name comes from an old tradition where people turned off all surrounding lights so the mikoshi could move through the streets in total darkness.

The festival runs from April 30 to May 6. However, the rituals from April 30 to May 2 are generally closed to the public. Public events begin on May 3 with the Koma-Kurabe horse-riding ritual along the historic Koshu-kaido road.

Kurayami Matsuri draws large crowds during Golden Week, especially on the main event days. Use public transportation when visiting, as traffic restrictions are in place around Fuchu throughout the festival. The shrine is a short walk from Keio Line Fuchu Station and JR Fuchu-Hommachi Station.

Admission is free. Food stalls and local vendors operate around the shrine, adding to the lively atmosphere. This festival offers a rare chance to experience a historic celebration with strong cultural roots.
