According to an old Oji legend, foxes from across Japan gather beneath a great tree on New Year’s Eve before making a pilgrimage to Oji Inari Shrine—a scene immortalized in Hiroshige Utagawa’s ukiyo-e. In 1993, locals revived this folklore with a small New Year’s Eve procession inspired by the artwork, marking the birth of the Oji Fox Procession. Since then, the tradition has grown into a beloved community event, earning national recognition with the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Award for Community Development in 1999.
