Sanno Matsuri at Hie Shrine
Jun 07, 2026 at 7:00am ~ Jun 17, 2026 at 5:00pm
The Sanno Matsuri 2026 returns to central Tokyo as one of the city’s most important traditional festivals, centered around Hie Shrine. Held in even-numbered years in its full scale, the festival is known for its historical roots and large processions that pass through key districts including Nagatacho, Marunouchi and areas near the Imperial Palace.
Festival Schedule
June 7, 2026 – June 17, 2026
Main Procession (Shinkosai): June 15, 2026 7:45 AM – 5:00 PM
The highlight is the Shinkosai procession on June 15, where participants dressed in historical attire accompany portable shrines through the streets. The route covers central Tokyo, offering a rare chance to see traditional festival culture set against a modern urban backdrop.
Unlike some neighborhood festivals, the Sanno Matsuri extends beyond the shrine grounds, incorporating major business districts and government areas. This creates a different atmosphere, where office buildings and wide avenues become part of the festival setting. The procession’s scale and historical significance make it one of the few opportunities to experience an Edo-period style festival in contemporary Tokyo.
Visitors can attend for free and explore different parts of the event depending on the day. While the main procession draws the largest crowds, smaller ceremonies and performances throughout the festival period provide a quieter way to experience the traditions associated with Hie Shrine.
