Ueno Cherry Blossom Festival

Ueno Onshi Park is one of Tokyo’s most established cherry blossom viewing spots, typically reaching peak bloom between mid-March and mid-April. The park’s cherry trees date back to the Edo period, when they were transplanted from Mount Yoshino under the direction of the monk Tenkai, helping establish the area as a centerpiece of springtime hanami in the city.

Held alongside the peak bloom, the annual Ueno Cherry Blossom Festival adds to the seasonal atmosphere with cultural performances, market stalls and evening illuminations. Around 800 lanterns are lit after dark, allowing visitors to enjoy nighttime cherry blossom viewing. With museums, galleries and a zoo spread throughout the grounds, the park is well suited for a relaxed spring stroll that combines nature and culture.
