A freezing spiritual reset at the 71st Midwinter Purification brings together brave locals and icy water in a tradition of raw New Year determination.

After the chief priest performs a purification ritual, about 80 people dressed in loincloths (women in white robes) do an elaborate warm-up and then enter a tank filled with icicles. It’s a visceral prayer for family health and gratitude that has defined the neighborhood’s January for generations.
