From punching pinks to creamy whites, plum blossoms are the first to appear in Tokyo’s winter landscape and were beloved by Edo poets and scholars alike. Yushima Tenmangu Shrine annually leads the season with a traditional elegance that comes from decades of celebration. Bunkyo Ume Matsuri (Plum Festival) has an old-world charm that feels right at home in the Edo era. There are a handful of stalls selling specialties such as plum sake.
