Life just became a little easier for the university students and culinary clodpates of this world. The Cupmen are there to help you through those torturous three minutes that stand between you and instant noodle perfection: the silicon figurines cling to the top of your noodle cup, keeping the lid in place while the contents cook—and changing color at the same time. This is about as niche as it gets, but we like it. Designer Akira Mabuchi is obsessed with the minutiae of kitchen life: other prototypes on his website include a spaghetti jar that also lets you measure portions and a saucepan mat made up of interweaving hiragana characters that spell out the names of different vegetables.

Cupmen, ¥840. Available from Amazon Japan, H Concept (www.h-concept.jp), AssistOn and select design stores.
