Established in 744 as a base for Buddhism in eastern Japan, Yakuoin Yukiji is nestled in the forests of Mt. Takao. The sheltered position saved it from being burned down in the civil war period, and today two of its main annual events involve fire. Falling on March 9 this year, the saito goma-ku purification ritual begins when a great bonfire is lit with sticks that worshippers have rubbed over their bodies. Later, Shugendo monks chant and walk barefoot across the smoldering ashes sacred fire. Members of the public can participate once the fire has been put out. Just bring a towel to wipe off the soot. May be cancelled if there is snow on the ground. Lisa Wallin
