Odawara isn’t the first place that comes to mind for a weekend escape, but this is something that the Hilton Odawara Resort & Spa hopes to change. Though only five years old, the stately, sprawling hotel harks back to a time before domestic getaways were swapped for cheap package trips to Guam. Perched in the Hakone foothills, the all-inclusive resort boasts both ample greenery and ocean vistas. All 172 rooms have views of Sagami Bay, and the higher the floor, the grander the panorama.

Advantageous location aside, the bathing and spa facilities (free for guests or available at day-use rates) are the main attraction. The indoor/outdoor Bade Zone includes hydrotherapy spa pools, saunas, a 25-meter swimming pool, and a lounging terrace that overlooks the manicured grounds. There is also a natural onsen and a heated stone spa; the latter costs extra but is highly recommended. Additional and varying leisure options abound, such as tennis, ceramics and bowling. Weekday visitors can take advantage of the new “Resort Activity Package,” which offers seven activity vouchers for just ¥10,000 that can be divvied up amongst family members.

The scale and general bustle of the hotel make it more suited to families than snuggling couples. The popular dinnertime buffet at the in-house Brasserie Flora—which offers such diverse delicacies as roast duck, lasagna, sushi and chocolate-covered marshmallows—is a testament to the Hilton Odawara’s aim to please an international and multi-generational clientele. Take advantage of the 2pm check-in time to make the most of your stay and to reserve early for popular activities.
