Turning pumpkin carving into an artform

If gouging a couple of triangles out of pumpkin to turn it into a run-of-the-mill Jack O’Lantern isn’t enough to get you into the Halloween spirit, try your hand at the exacting skill of artistic carving. The crafty folks at Carving Studio S in Akasaka offer lessons (from ¥3,300 including material fees) on how to turn fruit, candles and soap into intricate creations that are sure to impress as gifts, decorations or table centerpieces. Beginners are welcome and for Halloween the studio offers lessons on turning small pumpkins into works of art. Other classes place candles, soap and fruit under the knife. Taking a blade to a pricey watermelon will make some students nervous, but you can always eat your mistakes.
