“Edo’s ultimate graphic designer,” ukiyo-e artist Kuniyoshi is the subject of an extensive show in Roppongi. Recently the focus of considerable interest overseas, Kuniyoshi ((1797-1861) is revered for his phantasmagorical depictions of Japanese mythology. But Kuniyoshi also cut prints that function as news reports, and created lively pictures of children and beautiful women. Commemorating Kuniyoshi’s death a hundred and fifty years ago, this show presents 420 works, including not only well-known masterpieces but also newly discovered works.
