With no set, no narrative and a difficult score, MAX is the kind of piece that challenges even the most seasoned dance dork. But over the course of several visits, Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin and his Batsheva company have earned the goodwill of the Japanese dance community with the formal excellence of their compositions, meaning there should be plenty of fans in attendance for the local debut of their latest work. Naharin’s goal, he says, is nothing less than to “explore the pains and pleasures of being alive.”
