UNIVERSAL WOMAN

Regarding “Reaching for the Universe” (Star Struck, August 26): I sincerely hope that she is able to do well, but it is an extremely competitive contest and with a height of 5 ft. 6 inches, she’ll be a bit too short for the traditional Miss Universe winner. She claims to be opinionated but allowing the other person to disagree without attacking should help. An opinionated woman knows what she wants and speaks up about it, a women who’s self-confident. Still, good luck.—Novenachama*

POWER DOWN

Regarding “Summer of Setsuden” (Global Village, August 18): Tepco played it wily by first staging rolling blackouts, then telling people “either cut consumption, or the blackouts—unscheduled this time—will be back.” I think they expected that a few midsummer blackouts would convince people of the continuing need for nuclear energy; instead a commendable level of restraint has demonstrated that we can do with less electricity, and we can do without nuclear. We’ve reduced our consumption without making too many drastic changes. Minimal effort when you think about the folk still making do in school gyms and the workers putting their lives on the line to bring Daiichi under control.—cleo*
You can bet every penny that the same people who were so steadfast in their insistence to save energy will suddenly decide that anything less than 28 degrees is too cold to work in once winter comes around. Setsuden can go hang—spinsters must be kept nice and toasty at all times.—Ivan Coughanoffalot*

A LITTLE TIED UP

Regarding “A Ropy Pastime” (Body & Soul, August 26): Great article about Kinoko-san. I was very happy to see that he used my photo. That photo was taken in Osaka at Arcadia’s anniversary event. I have seen a lot of shibari performances and his shibari really stands out. He is an amazing kimbakushi and I highly recommend you check out one of his performances if you can. You can see some other photos from that Osaka performance on my Fetish in Osaka blog. (http://meturl.com/riksanchez) We also have a great, if small, fetish-SM scene here in Osaka and I have photos from different events on there. Looking forward to seeing Kinoko-san back in Osaka.—Rik Sanchez
The membership price is very revealing (if it’s correct)—do women pay so little because chances are good that they’ll be the ones being tied up, and therefore not learn very much about the art? Or is it just that men are more likely to quit after a couple of classes?—Maria*
