Acclaimed fine art photographer Mika Ninagawa is laying aside her camera and trying her hand at fashion design. The Fall 2010 “Mika Ninagawa Collection,” released next month, features seven designs produced in collaboration with Daikanyama-based brand 7 For All Mankind. Ninagawa’s photography is instantly recognizable for its super-saturated colors and flower motifs, and that signature aesthetic has carried over to her clothing line. The women’s “Lily” T-shirt (¥12,600) is an explosion of pink, blue and orange, complete with Ninagawa’s trademark lo-fi grainy film look. For guys who might shy away from such bold colors, the men’s denim jeans (¥27,090) feature a subtle, artistic gray vine motif that starts at the hem and fades out above the knee. Ninagawa, of course, is no stranger to the fashion world herself—she’s been a close collaborator with model-singer Anna Tsuchiya, and last year she founded the women’s fashion quarterly SWAK (short for “Sealed With a Kiss”). The 7 For All Mankind Mika Ninagawa collection goes on sale on August 19, and the store will be displaying works by the photographer in its second floor gallery through early September.
