Space Jam meets Zootopia. A diminutive member of the Capra genus aspires to one day play in the pro “Roarball” league, a fast-paced, all-animal, high-intensity, co-ed, full-contact derivation of basketball. His only slight prob is that the multitasking sport is dominated by the roughest, toughest – and biggest beasts on the planet, and he’s, well, a goat. A small one.
He gets his chance (of course; there are few surprises here) and begins the laborious process of working through every underdog (under-goat?) sports-movie cliché in the book. His momma told him to never give up; teamwork is more important than solo acclaim; you don’t have to be big to be good.
The background design and animation are more interesting than the story, and it’s more than a little frenetic. Personally, it gave me a headache. But I’m hardly in its target audience of B-Ball obsessed teens. Make that pre-teens.
This is one of those kid-centric animations that seem to exist solely to create jobs for Hollywood’s army of talented CGI wonks. It has a bit of heart if you look for it, though it’s all but buried in all the clamor.
I watched this partly because my man Stephen Curry produced it (and voices the giraffe). Need to up your game, Steph. (100 min)
