The biggest mystery surrounding writer/director M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense) is how he still manages to find people willing to fund his increasingly dismal movies.
Logic is tossed out early on here, when a single mom sends her two irritating kids for a visit with her estranged parents, whom they have never met. Grandma and Grandpa are weird. One of the kids is an aspiring filmmaker, allowing Shyamalan to venture into, yes, the dreaded “found footage” format.
I think M. is trying for a horror-comedy, but the giggles are nervous and the scares only mildly chilling. Comeback? Maybe next year. (94 min)
