The Tokyo Ballet this month becomes Japan’s first major company to take on one of the 20th century’s most revered works. Based on Pushkin’s novel-in-verse, Onegin was created by noted South Africa-born “ballet drama” innovator John Cranko in 1965. Set to Tchaikovsky’s well-known piano divertimento The Seasons, it’s now part of the repertoire of numerous companies worldwide. For its production, the Tokyo Ballet has brought in Reid Anderson of the Stuttgart Ballet to lead its principals, soloists and corps.
