When jazz pianist Satoko Fujii decides on something, she doesn’t do it by halves. This month, the mercurial musician releases no less than four albums with four different backing bands—simultaneously. To celebrate the feat, Fujii is holding an omnibus concert at Shinjuku jazz temple Pit Inn that will see all four groups perform. The first two, Gato Libre and First Meeting, are led by her husband, trumpeter Natsuki Tamura, while the last two are Fujii’s own Ma-do and the Satoko Fujii Orchestra Tokyo. Collectively, they encompass enough jazz—from ballads to free improvisation and acoustic to electric—to satisfy just about everyone. Guitarist Nels Cline from Wilco joins First Meeting as special guest.
