Second fiddle to the Bolshoi but with a charm and illustrious history all its own, the Moscow Stanislavsky Ballet appears in Shibuya as part of the 2010 Russia in Japan festivities. Under the guidance of Artistic Director Sergei Filin, the company and its orchestra will stage three programs over six days. The Opening Gala features selections from Faust, Don Quixote and other works, and Filin himself will grace the stage. Also to be performed are La Esmeralda, based on French author Victor Hugo’s Notre Dame du Paris and recently revived by Filin to much acclaim, and the Tchaikovsky chestnut Swan Lake, whose production by choreographer Vladimir Bourmeister is the company’s most popular.
