Luscious screens painted with real gold and pearl are on display in a revival of “The Art of Rimpa” exhibition that was canceled due to the 3/11 disaster. Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1828) founded the “modern” Edo school of Rimpa art to breathe new life into the elegant style founded by Kyoto artists including Korin, from which it gets its name. This show gives Rimpa fans another chance to revel in Hoitsu’s luxuriously abstract landscapes and Buddhist paintings, as well of the works of his most famous disciple Kiitsu Suzuki.
