Celebrated worldwide for his cover shot of John Lennon and Yoko Ono for their 1980 album Double Fantasy, lensman Kishin Shinoyama (b. 1940) is probably best known in Japan for his coffee table book of the seminude Rie Miyazawa, Santa Fe. Raided in 2009 by police on suspicion of indecency, Shinoyama has long sought to push boundaries in Japan, but his career also includes intimate looks at celebrities like writer Yukio Mishima. Shinoyama’s first major retrospective in Japan is a definitive selection of works grouped under themes like “God” and “Spectacle.”
