It’s nice, in a nostalgic sense, to see a pair of ’80s action icons give it one more slam-bam shot. And I can truthfully say that the acting by Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren is every bit as good as it ever was. This gleefully violent, direct-to-video retread by Peter’s kid John Hyams is impressive in the production values it manages to maintain despite a miniscule budget, but little else. A pair of middle-aged former Universal Soldiers—augmented, implanted super fighters—must battle not only each other but also lethal next-generation versions of themselves as well as a clunky, two-dimensional script.
