Media tradition dictates that it’s never really a new year proper until you’ve been showered with lists that look back at the old one, so we’ll do our part and share one of the more interesting seasonal rankings: Yahoo Japan’s ladder of the most popular search terms from 2010.

The list from the country’s biggest search engine rarely throws a curveball, but it’s still quite the eye-opener to see the Top 10 populated entirely by major tech players. The leaders are YouTube, Mixi and Google, with the newly popular (at least, in Japan) Twitter popping up at number eight. It’s not until you hit spot 11 that a “bricks and mortar” firm puts in an appearance, in the shape of national airline JAL.

Admittedly, the fact that this is an online endeavor means internet firms have a head start, but when blog services like Ameblo and bulletin boards such as 2channel are getting typed into the little white box more than old standards like NHK and Disney, that speaks volumes for the habits of the modern consumer.
