Emily Blunt continues to widen her range with this spot-on portrayal of a damaged, blackout drunk who becomes involved in a missing-persons case that’s none of her business. Or is it? A long way from The Devil Wears Prada. This adaptation of Paula Hawkins’s tricky, voyeuristic novel, transplanted from London to New York, is only sporadically successful. The constant doubt, and therefor tension, in the book is ditched in favor of a more easily understood plot. Gone Girl this isn’t, let alone Rear Window. But it’s never dull, and one to see for the acting by Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson and Haley Bennett. (112 min)
