AMRITARA Cosmetics Crafts Organic Skincare with Japanese Botanicals
Founder Sayuri Katsuta on building skincare guided by nature and science
In Japan’s growing organic beauty market, AMRITARA stands out for its uncompromising approach to ingredients, formulation and sustainability. Founded on the belief that skincare should work in harmony with the body’s natural functions, the brand relies on carefully sourced Japanese botanicals and preservative-free methods to create organic skincare products rooted in both science and tradition.
To understand how AMRITARA came to define its philosophy, it helps to look back at a pivotal moment in Japan’s cosmetic industry.

From Health Challenges to a Vision for Organic Skincare in Japan
In the 1980s, rising cases of cosmetic-related skin irritation in Japan led the government to require brands to disclose 103 designated potential irritants on their packaging. When full ingredient labeling became mandatory in 2001, consumers suddenly had far more responsibility and far more information than before.
For Sayuri Katsuta, a former theater actress who became a chiropractor after health challenges, this shift was eye-opening—and would later shape the philosophy behind AMRITARA, one of Japan’s leading organic skincare brands.
While exploring natural approaches to healthy aging, Katsuta discovered that even “additive-free” products still contained and relied on synthetic components. Authentic organic skincare, free from ingredients that interrupt the skin’s natural functions, simply didn’t exist in Japan.

But Katsuta believed it could. “With Japan’s powerful botanicals and skilled artisans, we could create something both gentle and effective,” she recalls. That belief became the foundation of AMRITARA.
Japanese Botanicals at the Core of AMRITARA Cosmetics
Katsuta immersed herself in research, visiting growers nationwide and even cultivating a small farm to learn directly from the soil. Along the way, she encountered botanicals that matched her vision: nutrient-rich birch sap from Hokkaido’s forests and knotweed indigo from Tokushima’s fields.
Birch sap is packed with moisturizing elements—including 17 types of amino acids, glucose and fructose—and has been recorded in Ainu history as “nature’s health drink.” Knotweed indigo, the source of Japan’s iconic “Japan Blue” dye, is valued for its antioxidant and antibacterial properties.
These ingredients now shape AMRITARA’s signature products, including its hydrating White Birch Water and the Indigo Balancing Soap, each highlighting the natural strength of birch and indigo.
Craftsmanship, Freshness and Preservative-Free Formulas
Transforming these ingredients into skincare requires craftsmanship that matches the care put into sourcing them. “At AMRITARA, we don’t mass-produce,” Katsuta explains. “We approach each formula the way a pastry chef approaches a fresh batch of sweets—always asking how we can keep it at its best from the moment we make it to the moment it reaches customers.”
To maintain freshness without synthetic preservatives, AMRITARA uses airless or backless containers to limit air exposure, stores all products in refrigerated warehouses below 15°C, and switches many items to chilled shipping in summer to protect their delicate aromas. Every step is designed to preserve integrity and deliver the product as fresh as possible.
Sustainability as a Core Philosophy, Not a Trend
That same attention extends to sustainability. For Katsuta, environmental responsibility isn’t a trend—it’s part of the brand’s core philosophy. “We are made of what surrounds us,” she explains. “Caring for the environment is just as important as caring for the skin.”
Beyond products, AMRITARA supports initiatives ranging from up-cycling plant materials and promoting fair trade to contributing to conservation activities. Its Omotesando flagship shop even operates on 100% green energy. “It’s not only about living organically—it’s about living in harmony with nature and protecting our ecosystems.”

AMRITARA’s Global Expansion and the Future of Japanese Organic Beauty
Seventeen years on, AMRITARA continues to shape Japan’s organic skincare landscape while staying true to its original values. Now, the brand is preparing to expand abroad. AMRITARA has begun offering products through Tmall and plans to launch its global online store later this year, followed by entry into the U.S. market.
“We hope to share our philosophy and craftsmanship with people around the world,” Katsuta says. For anyone curious about Japanese organic beauty, AMRITARA offers a thoughtful place to begin.
