Dear AMA,
I see so many women in Japan with really elaborate nail art. As a man, I’m not up for all that lacquer and 3D stuff, but I’d like to try getting a professional manicure sometime. Is it worth it? And what’s the difference between cutting my nails at home and getting them done at a salon, anyway?—Manny Peddy
Dear Manny Peddy,
We passed your query on to Lena Kasai, manager and head nail artist at JoliNails Nail Salon and Spa. Here’s what she had to say…
“Before rejecting the idea of hand and foot treatment for men, think about it for a moment. When you see a well-dressed businessman wearing high-end accessories, but his hands and nails look dry and untidy, does it leave a good impression on you? If your answer is “I don’t really care,” then let me tell you, others—especially women—do. In Japan, men often head to salons for nail care ahead of their wedding, as they know there will be many close-up photos of their hands while wearing their wedding ring.
Avid sportsmen should also consider regular podiatry care as their feet are under a lot of physical stress. Nails can deform from bumps and crashes, turning into ingrown nails, which are painful and can even require surgery if left unattended. Additionally, if you don’t cut your nails carefully, germs can enter fresh nicks and blisters, and cause infections. Calluses tend to grow thicker on the soles of those who walk or play sports regularly. They can turn dry and then crack (especially in Japan’s winter), which is not only painful but aesthetically unappealing. If you’re not sure about the condition of your hands and feet, don’t be scared to visit a beauty salon. In my opinion it’s as normal as going to the barber shop. I’m sure your existing or future partner will value your effort as well—especially with those well-manscaped and much-more-inviting dexterous digits.”
