Cinema Vera (1-5 Maruyamacho, Shibuya-ku ; www.cinemavera.com) is running a series of films about the world under Nazi rule until August 26. The lineup includes the classic Casablanca (1942; pictured), the recent films The Reader (2008) and Inglourious Basterds (2009), as well the Three Stooges in You Natzy Spy! (1941), the first film to satirize Hitler… Other war-related films will be screened as Shin-Bungeiza in Ikebukuro (3F, 1-43-5 Higashi-Ikebukuro Toshima-ku; www.shin-bungeiza.com) marks the anniversary of the end of WWII with a program of films set in Japan during the post-war period, August 11-19. The series begins with The Longest Day in Japan (1967) about the effect of the emperor’s surrender… Shinjuku Musashinokan (3-27-10 Shinjuku; http://shinjuku.musashino-k.jp) is continuing its series of ’70s American films with a revival of Robert Altman’s Nashville (1975). Altman used an ensemble cast including Shelly Duvall and Lilly Tomlin to satirize the country music industry, with the actors performing songs they wrote themselves.
