Originally published way back in 1988, What’s What in Japanese Restaurants has been given a makeover for its newly released third edition. The compact yet comprehensive guide, written by Robb Satterwhite of the popular website Bento.com, offers tips for both J-food newbies and veteran foodies. Topics range from basic etiquette to “The Evolution of Izakaya,” with sections on depachika, prominent regional cuisines and specialty restaurants; the glossary and pronunciation guide should also come in handy. Satterwhite writes with knowledge and wit—we’re told, for instance, that “a kaiseki meal is easy to order (although not necessarily easy to pay for)”—making him an amiable guide to the ins and outs of local dining culture. If you’re looking for a single-volume introduction to eating in Japan, What’s What in Japanese Restaurants deserves a spot at the top of your list.
