If you haven’t yet experienced the imbecilic pleasures of The World of Golden Eggs, you should really stay in more. Originally aired on MTV Japan, the show has been one of the more bizarre success stories of the past few years, topping the anime DVD charts, appearing in ads for Nissan and C.C. Lemon, and spawning its own videogames, stage show and conbini snacks. The bite-sized episodes, rendered in clunky computer graphics, follow the adventures of the residents of Turkey Hill, USA, and bristle with surreal humor and pop culture references. What’s more, the DVD versions come with hilariously off-base English subtitles that just heighten the weird factor.
The World of Golden Eggs seasons 1 & 2, ¥8,000 each. Available from major DVD stores and Amazon Japan.
