It’s lucky that Futako-Tamagawa (a.k.a. “Nicotama”) is such a popular spot—otherwise, the near-constant construction during the past several years might have done serious damage to its cachet as a shopping destination. But the developers behind one of those projects, Futako-Tamagawa Rise, are hoping that the March 17 grand opening will make the years of putting up with an eyesore worth it. The retail portion of the massive mixed-use complex (far right) contains three separate buildings connected by a sprawling 6,000m2 basement that will be home to a Tokyu Food Store depachika. Town Front, the largest of the three buildings, will house the usual mix of boutiques and restaurants, while River Front will be devoted to large-scale shops like Village Vanguard, ABC Mart and Tokyo’s sixth H&M. Station Mart, connected directly to (you guessed it) Futako-Tamagawa station, will serve as the main entrance, housing slightly lower-brow shops like Daiso.
