Much like pole dancing, belly dancing is an erotic entertainment for men that’s being reclaimed by a new generation of practitioners. Japan has its own coterie of contemporary, liberated belly dancers, but every so often a certified star will arrive from overseas to light a fire under their bangles. Dalia Carella is a master of what she calls “Dunyavi Gypsy Dance” and has intensively researched the background of belly dancing among the Roma people. She recently received rave reviews for her performance and choreography in a 12-week run of Off-Broadway play Desert Sunrise, and will be performing in Tokyo along with members of her own company and Japan-based belly-dance exponents, including Mishaal and Samanyolu.
