Launched in 2000 and held every three years, Japan’s Echigo-Tsumari Art Field is the world’s largest international outdoor art festival. It offers a unique way to explore satoyama (mountain villages), with artworks serving as guiding lights, garnering significant attention both domestically and internationally as a leading example of community building through art.
Since its inception, the festival has attracted nearly a thousand artists from over 100 countries and regions, who personally visit the exhibition site and participate in creating the art. Over the past 25 years, more than 230 permanent works have been established throughout Echigo-Tsumari, earning it the nickname “an art museum without a roof.”
The festival takes place in the Echigo-Tsumari region of Niigata, known for its heavy snowfall in winter and facing challenges of aging and depopulation. Despite these challenges, the region maintains a vibrant satoyama lifestyle, where people interact with the land through agriculture, and artworks are displayed in nature year-round.
